**China Silent on Artist's Arrest, Condemns Western Support**
The Chinese Foreign Ministry refused Tuesday to provide details about
the whereabouts of detained artist and human rights activist Ai
Weiwei, and criticized Western governments for supporting a "suspected
criminal" who is facing charges for economic crimes.
Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said international
support for Ai has confused and angered the Chinese people, who, he
says, question why a government critic and crime suspect is being
treated outside China as a hero. He also repeated criticism of a
recent U.S. report that heavily criticized China's human rights
record, telling reporters that Washington should address its own human
rights record.
The United States, Australia and a host of European governments have
joined Amnesty International and other rights groups in calling for
Ai's release. In Brussels Tuesday, European Union Foreign Affairs
minister Catherine Ashton issued a statement saying she is "deeply
concerned at the deterioration in the human rights situation in
China." She also voiced dismay over restrictions recently placed on
foreign journalists by the Beijing government.
China has in recent weeks launched a widespread crackdown on dissent,
arresting anti-government activists, bloggers, Christian worshippers
and threatening Western journalists, as part of a push to prevent
public protests like those launched earlier this year in the Middle
East and North Africa.
