  Ni Hao! 你好!

I had the privilege, and I call it a privilege because not every Westerner has the chance to go behind the The Great Wall and experience what living and working in China is like. For me it was a wonderful experience. I’ve always been enamored with China, her people and culture. After my three and a half year stay, the Chinese people have become very near and dear to my heart. My interest in China began at around the age of 18, ,when I bought a copy of the Yi Jing, The Book of Changes. A kind of divining method or tool. And it spread and caught fire in my soul. The fire still burns in me some 34 years later.

I went there to work as an educator teaching English, and coaching students for the interview process as part of getting a student visa to study abroad. It is difficult for them to say the least, especially if they want to come to America. I lived in the densely populated city of Chongqing, part of the Sichuan Province. In Chongqing the summers are brutal where the temperature hovers around a cool 40 degrees Celsius! This goes on for three months, with very little rain if any.

The population of China on January 1st 2010 is approximately 1,347,740,174.

The Internet Experience and Blogging: Behind The Great Firewall!

Yes, you’ve all heard of the The Great Wall, but there is also The Great Firewall or The Golden Shield Project, that blocks Chinese Netizens from accessing such sites as YouTube, Wikipedia, FaceBook to mention only a few of many. My own Internet experience in China was horrible to say the least. Accessing sites outside of the Mainland was painfully slow, and at other times impossible. There were times when my Gmail account was inaccessible. Internet censorship is notorious in China.

The Government bans users, by banning sensitive keyword phrases. For example searches for words like tyranny, Tibet, Tiananmen Square Massacre. Inside Mainland China these results will return 404 page errors, or will never connect to any DNS trying to access sites containing information on these topics. China uses an estimated 30,000 INTERNET police to monitor their Netizens. Netizens there have to use proxy servers, and tools like TOR, and GLadder to get around the blocking techniques used by the government. They have also discovered other methods I do not describe here!

People have been blogging in China since 2003. According to chinabloglist,  free blog hosting services Blogspot (Blogger’) WordPress.com, and Livejournal are blocked. Bloggers in China often use their blogging to voice their disdain for the Government, some blog about entertainment, news items, and their daily struggles in Chinese society.

How many people blog in China? The latest data I could find according to Baidu, put the number of bloggers in excess of 16 million, and the number of blogs around 37 million. Each blogger has 2.3 blogs on average. This information was from 2005. The numbers may have grown exponentially by 2010. It was difficult to find accurate numbers in my Google searches for the latest data. Two of the most famous bloggers in China are world renown artist and activist Ai Wei Wei, who maintains around 5 blogs which have been shutdown at one time or another. He also has a huge Twitter following. The other blogger being Han Han, heartthrob, race car driver, pop novelist, and China’s most read blogger.  Bokee is the most used blog hosting service in China, followed by Blogcn, Sina Blog and Sohu Blog.

This is just a brief outline of the Internet and blogging in China. I have left hyper links as further reading, with more in depth information, and statistics.

The Chinalyst is an informal community for China related English blogging.

CNReviews a site about People, Business, and Life In China which maintains a wealth of information and a huge blog catalog.

  Until next time….zai jian!
