Xinjiang was first absorbed into the entity we today call China when the Qianlong Emperor’s armies permanently occupied Zungharia and the Tarim Basin after the climax of a generations-long feud between the Qing Dynasty and the Zunghar Mongols. However, in the mid-19th century, as massive revolts rocked the Empire’s crumbling foundations, the Western Regions slipped out from Qing control and became the personal domain of the wily Andijani Yakub Beg. Only after the Qing general and military genius Zuo Zongtang re-conquered the Northwest in the name of the Emperor did it receive the name we know it by today, “The New Dominion.” Today, we’re proud to adopt a Zuo Zongtang-esque pride as we announce the own re-vanquishing, if you will, of our New Dominion. We’re back!
Of course, the Qing dynasty itself did eventually collapse entirely, and given the grim tidings of such an analogy, I think the first thing we should do is highlight and applaud the many Xinjiang resources, some new, that are available. While we hope to be one of your primary go-to sites for Xinjiang information, make sure to bookmark and RSS these sites:
Far West China: The indefatigable Josh Summers kept up his information stream even in the thick of the Great Xinjiang Blackout, which continues to this day. With several years of blogging and several blogging awards under his belt, we’re certain that Josh will be a superb Xinjiang resources for years to come.
洋鬼子: Chuck Kraus, writer of a blog whose title is Chinese for “Foreign Devil,” suddenly burst into the Xinjiang blogosphere in July and has been producing a steady stream of extremely-well researched, scholarly articles on the bubbling cauldron of intrigue and adventures that was Xinjiang in early to mid 19th century.
autonomous region: Another newcomer whose rapid appearance was followed by a rapid string of excellent posts, autonomous region is written by an individual with many expert insights into the aural qualities of the New Dominion, issues of ethnic identity and representation, and Uyghur cuisine.
Uyghur Blog: Starting in August 2009, Uyghur Blog has been creating and analyzing material with an eye on highlighting and advocating for the betterment of the human rights of Uyghurs, an effort we salute.
This is Xinjiang: Written by a student teaching and conducting graduate research in Xinjiang, This is Xinjiang contains posts and observations with an intriguing and illuminating “ethnographer’s-eye-view” of life in the New Dominion. After a long hiatus, the author has recently returned with a piercing analysis of minority representation in postcards and art.
Twitter of Henryk Szadziewski: Szadziewski, manager of the Uyghur Human Rights Project, reflects the constant research and monitoring required by his work through his immensely prolific Twitter account which collects into one stream all sorts of Xinjiang information and tidbits scattered all throughout the Internet.
We authors of The New Dominion, after several months of various annoyances, issues, and inconveniences to take care of, are now mostly in circumstances which we believe will permit us to write some interesting content on Xinjiang and the Uyghurs, and we invite you all to stay tuned for our opinions, thoughts, and analyses of the many sides of Xinjiang from political to cultural to historical to linguistic. However, if, like the Qing dynasty, our plans for grand Empire go awry, I believe we all can rest assured that our Xinjiang compatriots above will go on carry the Western Regions torch as they have before.
